Sand mafia’s aides assault official

A man sustained injuries after some persons, supposedly aides of a sand mafia, allegedly tried to mow him down for trying to stop them from stealing sand at a dam near the Sutlej river on Tuesday.

In his statement to the police, the victim, Karan Singh, an employee at the drainage department, said he and an assistant engineer was on duty at the dam when they spotted the accused stealing sand from the riverbed.

When they tried to halt the operation, the accused — Bhinda of Kalewal village, Baggu of Qadar village, Kaka Singh of Kalewal and his son — tried to run him over with their tractor after which they fled the spot.

He suffered grave injuries, including fracture in the ribs, and was admitted to CMC Hospital.

The accused have been booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the Indian penal code. Sub-inspector Rajesh Thakur, SHO of Meharban police station, said hunt was on to nab the accused.
