Sandeep Sahni became the elected president of Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, on Tuesday, having already served around four years as acting president. In the poll results declared in the evening, Sahni got 2,321 votes out of the total 4,371 counted. His nearest rival was RK Mittal, who got 1,013 votes.
Congress leader and former mayor Ravinder Pal Singh Pali stood third with 863, while AK Sinha got just 142 votes.
Voting was held on Monday. The counting for posts of eight executive members for which 21 candidates were in the fray was still on.
The last election was held in 2004 in which Mukesh Bassi was elected as president. He resigned from the post in 2012 after becoming a municipal councillor, and Sahni was acting president since.
After winning the elections, Sahni said, “I will make Chandigarh Club world-class by improving the sports and entertainment facilities, and the quality of food. Naresh Chaudhary was already elected vice-president unanimously.
Established in 1957, Chandigarh Club is one of the oldest clubs in the city with more than 8,000 members, including politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen. The club is spread over 8.5 acres.
