Residents of ward number 1 rounded up the executive engineer of Sangrur municipal council on Tuesday for allegedly not taking action against encroachment of the drain passing through their colony.
The residents alleged that Surjit Singh took money from encroachers. They not only raised slogans against the officials but also forcefully took him to the place of encroachment and demanded that he take some action. Police personnel were deployed at the local Guru Ravidas Colony to avoid any untoward incident.
Councillor Ripudaman Singh Dhillon said repeated representations and requests of residents had failed to spur the civic body into action.
However, in the face of the protest on Tuesday, civic body officials swiftly removed the encroachments amid tight security.
Refuting allegations of corruptions against him, Surjit said neither had he given permission to anyone to do any construction, nor had he received any complaint about the encroachment.
Encroachers, on the other hand, protested saying that they had court orders in their favour and taken prior permission from the department concerned for construction.
