Inaugurated with much fanfare, the 'Adarsh' railway station here, promising 'Adarsh' facilities to the passengers, is yet waiting for opening of the facilities like toilets and the delay has been causing a great inconvenience to the passengers.
Due to non-availability of a contractor and a sweeper, the newly constructed public toilet has not been made operational even three months after sitting Congress MP Vijay Inder Singla inaugurated the station on Feburary 9, right before the declaration of Lok Sabha elections.
Singla had, in a way, done his duty to woo the voters, but now the railway management was finding it difficult to find out the contractor for the toilet.
"We have given the advertisement repeatedly but nobody was ready for the bidding of the toilets as Sangrur is a small city and I don't think that the people in this city will like to pay for bath and using toilets," said a senior officer of the railway station, on the condition of not disclosing his name.
Similar is the condition of the newly created VIP retiring room and VIP lodge. The railway authorities have failed to provide these facilities to the commuters due to the lack of staff.
"Though we have finalised the rate list for the VIP lodge on the basis of the rates in hotels of the city, yet I don't think that people (VIPs) would like to stay here and even the number of the commuters at this railway station is very less," said the officer, adding, "We do not have enough staff even to ensure basic facilities to the passengers, then how we can to start these facilities for the VIPs?"
It may be recalled that while inaugurating the station with 'Adarsh' facilities, Singla, who again contested the election on the issue of development, had informed that modernisation of the station was carried out at a cost of `3.15 crore and it will provide additional facilities like neat and clean washrooms, a VIP retiring room and a lodge, a foot overbridge, shelter on the platforms, etc.
Singla had also mentioned that he had worked hard to bring Sangrur railway station under the 'Adarsh' scheme.
