Farmers of Sangrur district have brought laurels to the state by becoming number one district in the country when it comes to production of wheat per hectare area.

The team of senior officials from the union agriculture department, which visited the district on Wednesday, confirmed that the district’s wheat production per hectare is highest in the country.

Dr GK Chaudhary, director, agriculture (wheat), said it had been recorded that farmers in Sangrur had produced 5,505 kg per hectare of wheat in 2012 against 5,189 kg per hectare in 2011.
The team was on a visit to take stock of the facilities provided to farmers under the National Food Security Mission.

He said that in 2011, Malda district in West Bengal had recorded the highest production of 5,232 kg per hectare in the country, but this time, the production had reduced to 5,070 kg per hectare. “It has been happy news for the farmers of the district that they have recorded an increase of 316 kg over 2011 and proved their mettle not only in the state but in the country," he said.

While congratulating farmers and officials of the district agriculture department, deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul said that it was a proud moment for the farmers and officials as their team effort had brought results to the district as well as the state.

Chief agriculture officer Rajinder Singh Sohi said hardworking and dedicated efforts of the whole staff at the ground level, including technical support from technical officers and cooperation from farmers, have led to the district coming on to the national agriculture map.

The union agriculture department officials visited fields of different varieties of wheat crop, including HD-2967 and PBW-621 to take stock of the growth of the crop.

Meanwhile, Sohi said no attack of any disease had been reported in the district so far over the wheat crop. Around 2.85 lakh hectare of area is under wheat crop this year.
