United Akali Dal senior vice-president Wassan Singh Zaffarwal on Monday approached the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking bail in the Sarbat Khalsa row.

The petition will come up for hearing later this week.

Zaffarwal, among others, was arrested on charges of sedition, by Punjab Police following the radical Sarbat Khalsa organised at Chabba village in Amritsar on November 10.

In his petition, he has claimed that he was falsely implicated by Punjab Police at the “behest” of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to prosecute the leaders of the opposition who tried to raise their voice against the “misuse” of the SGPC.

It was argued that he did not indulge in any unlawful activity and also the FIR did not make any specific charges against him. The petitioner reasoned that as the others booked in the incident -- United Akali Dal president Mohkam Singh and Bhupinder Singh of the Akali Dal (Amritsar) -- had got bail, he should also be granted bail.
