A British woman of Indian origin, who claims to be the fiancee of Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh, has filed a police complaint alleging that he, along with his brother, harassed her physically and mentally.
She alleged that she got pregnant with Sardar’s child, who forced her to abort the child after which she went back to the UK and consulted her family on the issue.
“I was left with no other option but to abort this child against my will. After this matter, Sardar abandoned me, he doesn’t speak to me, has no contact with me. He actually denied the fact that I am his fiancee when the entire world knows about us,” she said.
“After being physically and mentally harassed by Sardar Singh, as a woman it’s not fair that I should take this abuse and not just by him but by his elder brother as well as him,” she added.
The complainant said she met Sardar in 2012 after becoming friends through Facebook. She claimed they began living together after their engagement.
“I have been in a relationship with Sardar Singh for last four years. I have been engaged to him for last two years. After engagement, Sardar forced me to be in a physical relationship on the terms that we are going to get married,” the complainant told ANI.
“Our relationship developed and within a year of 2015 he got me pregnant. After consulting with Sardar on this matter, he refused to speak to me and was adamant that I should abort the child right away,” she added.
Meanwhile, Sardar , who is also a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Haryana, said that he was busy in the ongoing hockey league and had not seen the copy of the complaint made by the woman. “I will first see what report the police have written. Only then will I get back to reply all your questions... I was not engaged (to the complainant),” a visibly disturbed Sardar told the media on Wednesday as he came out of the Chandigarh airport where he arrived for a match of a hockey league.
“I have just come from a game last night. I am concentrating on the next game,” Sardar said, as he pulled himself away from the media questioning.
Meanwhile, his family members have alleged the entire episode to be a conspiracy to malign his image and ruin his career.
Sardar’s father Gurnam Singh told reporters in Haryana’s Sirsa district that his son knew the woman but denied both were engaged.
Meanwhile, the police in Ludhiana formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the complaint. The team consists of additional deputy Commissioner of police (ADCP), city -4, Satbir Singh Atwal, assistant commissioner of police ( ACP), Gill, Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, and the Koom Kalan station house officer (SHO), sub-inspector Surjit Singh Nagra. Atwal said the police would verify the facts and also ask Sardar Singh to join the investigation.
Investigations in the case have been marked to the Koom Kalan police station in Ludhiana district. Police station in-charge SS Nagra confirmed the matter was under probe following the complaint. The woman had complained to Ludhiana police commissioner PS Umranangal who marked an inquiry into it.
In the past, Sardar Singh had posted tweets and his photographs with the British woman.
Online, the woman too had been posting the love story since 2012. According to a tweet around six months ago, they had met in London during the Olympic Games and were to be married. She had talked about the relationship during several interviews alone as well as with Sardar.
In video footage doing the rounds online, reportedly dating back to 2012, she describes their relationship as “stable”. She mentions marriage too.
Sardar too has posted tweets and his photographs with the British woman in the past.
In the interview, as reported by a news site on the basis of the vide, the woman has said that “after their virtual friendship turned into love, it was their shared passion for hockey and their Namdhari sect traditions that got them closer.”
She says in the interviews that she is ready to move to India “following her marriage”. (HTC inputs)
