It is nothing less than ghar wapsi for SAS Nagar (Mohali) mayor Kulwant Singh. Putting all speculations to rest, he will be joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party back on Wednesday in the presence of Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Kulwant became the first mayor of SAS Nagar in August 2015 as per an agreement between the Congress and the Azad group led by him. Rishabh Jain of the Congress had secured senior deputy mayor’s post and independent councillor Manjeet Singh Sethi had got deputy mayor’s post with 23 SAD-BJP councilors opting out of participating in the voting. Despite having majority seats, SAD-BJP alliance had to sit in the opposition.

Kulwant was the SAD candidate from Fatehgarh Sahib in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The real estate developer Kulwant and other members of the Azad group had left the SAD following their differences with SAD leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia as the latter had refused party tickets to Kulwant and his loyalist in the run up to the SAS Nagar MC elections.

Dynamics of the house to change

MC SAS Nagar had total 50 councilors of which SAD-BJP combine has 23 seats, the Azad Group 11, the Congress 14 (one ex officio member Sidhu) and two Independents. After joining the SAD, Kulwant will automatically get the support of the 23 SAD-BJP councilors.
