A 22-year-old resident of SAS Nagar was held captive and raped repeatedly by a 50-year-old man for at least three days, after being lured with the promise of a better job, police said on Sunday.

The victim managed to escape the accused's house and filed a complaint with the Basti Jodhewal police, who registered a case under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and arrested the accused immediately.

Giving details, inspector Harwinder Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Basti Jodhewal police station, said the accused, Gurcharan Singh, was a three-wheeler driver, while his wife ran a boutique in their rented accommodation at Basant Vihar of Basti Jodhewal.

“The victim, who hails from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh, was employed at a mobile service providing company in Chandigarh and lived as a paying guest in Kharar, SAS Nagar. She recently came in contact with Gurcharan through an acquaintance, following which he offered her to help her get a better job if she came to Ludhiana,” he added.

Therefore, the victim reached Ludhiana around three days ago. The accused then took her to his house, held her captive there and repeatedly raped her, the SHO claimed.

He said they were investigating whether the accused's family was aware of his crime, adding that initial investigation had reveled that the accused's 19-year-old was missing for the past one year. But, the family never reported the matter to the police.

He said there were speculations that the accused used to sexually exploit his daughter and therefore she had run away from home, adding that they were questioning the accused's family to ascertain details of the girl's disappearance.
