School bus hits divider, overturns; 15 hurt

A 32-seater mini schoolbus overturned on the Chandigarh road after hitting a divider near the Mundian area around 8.30 am on Thursday. Fifteen students travelling in bus suffered injuries, besides the driver.
The injured were rushed to the civil hospital and CMC hospital in the city. Some of the students who sustained minor injuries were discharged immediately after administering first aid at the civil hospital, while 12 injured, including the driver, were admitted.
Mandeep Kaur (17), Taranpreet Kaur (12), Kamaljit Kaur (17), Sarabjit Kaur (17), Gurinder Kaur (17) and Harminder Kaur (18) of Jhabewal village; Swapanjit Kaur (18) of Khasi Kalan village; Manpreet Kaur (18) and Amandeep Kaur (18) of Bhamian Khurd village; and driver Sukhchain Singh alias Sukha are admitted to the civil hospital.
While Sarabjit Kaur (17) and Harmandeep Kaur (17) of Bhamian Khurd were referred to the CMC hospital and their condition was stated critical.
The Focal Point police have registered an FIR against bus driver for reckless driving and causing injuries to others.
The police are investigating that whether the vehicle was fulfilling all formalities set by the district transport office.
The bus was ferrying students to Government Girls School, Sahnewal. Nearly 35 students were travelling in the bus. When the bus reached near Mundian on the Chandigarh road, it turned over after hitting a divider on the road. The passers-by came to the rescue and sounded to ambulance service at 108, which rushed the students to the hospital.
According to students, the driver was listening to songs on his mobile phone and was driving very fast. They asked him to go slow, but he unheard their pleas. As a result, the bus overturned with a jerk. We were unconscious for a while after colliding with seats and windows of the bus.
Bus driver Sukhchain Singh said he was driving at normal speed, but a cart suddenly came before the bus. To evade collision, he turned the steering, but unfortunately the bus collided with the divider and turned over.
SHO of the Focal Point police station inspector Davinder Choudhary said the police party reached at the spot immediately after receiving information.
