At least 14 children were injured when an ovecrowded school bus overturned on Thalesh road in Sangrur on Thursday.
The mishap occurred around 2 pm when the driver of the bus, which was taking students back home from La Foundation School, lost control over the vehicle. The 52-seater bus was carrying 70 children.
The rescuers had to smash the windowpanes to pull out the students. All the injured, including four teachers, were shifted to a nearby private hospital.
The injured children are between 7 and 14 years. “All patients are out of danger,” said a doctor.
“My daughter usually comes home around 2pm. But when she did not reach today, we called up the school and came to know that the bus had overturned. We rushed to the hospital and found that she had suffered injuries on her face ,” said Gurdeep Singh father of a class-4 student.
“There was no technical fault in the vehicle,” said ML Garg, chairman, La Foundation School.
District transport officer Himanshu Gupta said under the government rules, carrying students more than the seating capacity of the school bus or van is an offence. “I will look into the matter,” he added.
