St Carmel School, Katli, has opposed the Punjab government's decision to set up a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts near the school campus.

School manager Madhuri Saini said the rehabilitation centre - being constructed at the Rupnagar municipal council land adjoining the school campus-could vitiate the environment.

She added, "The land owned by the irrigation department in Katli road village is lying vacant for years. The land is away from the school and the residential areas. The government can use it to construct the rehabilitation centre for drug addicts."

She also demanded the construction work of the de-addiction centre must be stopped immediately.

The principal also informed that the school had also sent a representation to the Rupnagar deputy commissioner (DC) and civil surgeon in this regard.

When contacted, Rupnagar civil surgeon Surinder Gangar said that successfully-treated drug addicts would be kept at the centre for some time so as to ensure they didn't become the drug addicts again.

Civil surgeon added, "I have received a representation of the school against the de-addiction centre. However, it was up to the DC or the state government to take a call."
