The Mukerian police have registered a case against the head teacher and staff of Government High School Balhadda for allegedly driving a class 7 student to commit suicide. The body of 14-year-old Pushwinder Singh, son of Dalowal village's former sarpanch Surjit Singh, was recovered from Shah Nehar on Wednesday. The boy had been reported missing since March 16.

The victim's father alleged that his son was beaten up by the school staff and in a fit of anger, ended his life.

Preliminary police inquiry revealed that the boy was admonished for teasing a girl student and his father had been called to the school to inform him about his son's conduct. However, before the former sarpanch could reach the school, the boy reportedly escaped on his bicycle from the boundary-less school premises did not return home.

His family had been looking for him ever since and a missing report had been lodged with the police. His bicycle was recovered from near the Shah Nehar which raised suspicion that he might have jumped in the river. His father had been searching for him with the help of a boat. On Wednesday, a body was recovered from the banks of the river near Sri Hargobindpur, which the family identified as that of Pushwinder. Police sources said that the head had been eaten away. After a post-mortem, the body was handed over to the kin.

Mukerian SHO Harbhajan Singh said that the headmaster and staff were absconding.
