In a shocking incident, a 60-year-old private school van driver allegedly molested a five-year-old girl before dropping her at her residence at Bassi Ghulam Hussain village on Wednesday.
The victim narrated the incident to her grandmother, who immediately informed the school authorities through an acquaintance.
The police have registered a case against the accused on Thursday. Meanwhile, the school authorities have sacked the accused on Thursday.
"My granddaughter, who studies in UKG at Epitome World School in the Civil Lines area, was very disturbed when she reached home yesterday. Even after washing her face repeatedly, she said she was feeling unclean. She suddenly started crying and told me that the van driver touched her inappropriately," said Suman Lata.
She revealed that her granddaughter was always dropped in the end as her village was the last stoppage of the van.
The child's parents were settled abroad. Ranjiv Talwar, who brought the matter to the notice of school authorities, said that despite the warning, the school administration allowed the driver to resume work.
"When I arrived in the school today to know about the action, the driver was allowed to escape," he alleged.
School principal Chhavi Saini, however, said that since the complaint came to her after the school hours, she could verify the facts on Thursday only. "I lost no time in sacking the driver," she claimed.
She said the man in question had been working with the school for the last five years but there was never any complaint against him. She claimed that the man's credentials were checked before his appointment, but failed to produce any evidence. The school record did not even have his picture.
On the basis of a written complaint, a case was registered against driver Kewal Krishan of Dagana Kalan, under section 354 (assault on women with intention to outrage her modesty) under the Indian Penal Code at the city police station.
The complaint was first received at the Sadar police station, but later it was transferred to the city police as the alleged incident had occurred under the latter's jurisdiction. City station house officer Amarnath said the accused would be arrested soon.
