Panic prevailed outside Boys' School in Majitha, near Amritsar, after a class 12 student was kidnapped on Saturday afternoon.
The victim, Harwinder Singh, was pushed into car by some unidentified persons after they opened fire in the air.
The police swung into action and patrolling teams were rushed to various spots as a result of which the kidnappers were forced to abandon the boy after a one-hour chase.
The incident took place when Harwinder came out of the school at around 12.15 pm after taking his examination.
Giving details about the incident to HT, Jasdeep Singh, superintendent of police (SP-D), Amritsar (rural) police, said, " As soon as Harwinder came out of Boy's School Majitha at about 12.15 pm, four unidentified persons came in a car and bundled him into their vehicle after firing in the air with a revolver."
"Panic gripped the area and the school authorities immediately informed the police. Police patrol parties rushed on various routes and the kidnappers were chased," the superintendent of police said.
After about one hour, the kidnappers abandoned Harwinder on Fatehgarh Churian Road, the SP added.
He informed that Harwinder was beaten up by the kidnappers. Some clues about the identity of the accused have emerged and police are working to nab them, he added.
A case against the kidnappers has been registered against the accused at the Majitha police station.
