Local senior administrative officers who had intervened in the spat between Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Kuljit Singh Nagra and Fatehgarh Sahib sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Pooja Syal Grewal, to broker a compromise between the two, said their efforts proved futile.

Though the inquiry which was handed over to the divisional commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu by the Punjab chief minister is yet to begin, it was learnt that cross complaints had hit a roadblock and the local administration had failed to initiate any action even after Grewal alleged that Nagra had used abusive language against her on September 15 in a municipal corporation meeting at Sirhind.

The Congress MLA alleged in a complaint that “on September 15, he went to the office of the municipal commissioner Sirhind along with city traders to attend a meeting which was convened by the SDM Pooja Syal Grewal, but she did not turn up there by 10:30am.”

The complaint further stated that Nagra had been told by the executive officer (EO) that the meeting could not take place as the SDM was not attending her phone.

The complaint further stated that it was violation of protocol as no prior intimation had been given to them about the cancellation of meeting. It said Nagra approached the DC at 11am over the phone and on his intervention, the SDM reached the spot at 11:25 am.

Meanwhile, the SDM alleged that when the Congress MLA used abusive language, she informed the deputy commissioner in writing. She said she did not lodge a complaint but informed the DC in this regard in four lines. The written information lodged by the SDM stated that she got late because she had gone to record her statement in a case and reached the meeting at about 11:08 am.

She further stated that during the meeting, the MLA used abusive language. Nagra said he had first informed the DC and also told her during the meeting that it was a violation of protocol and only then had she given it in writing to the DC. Grewal, on the other hand, said she had not complained against the MLA but reported the matter to the DC.

Parties burn effigies

The verbal spat continued with leaders from Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal indulging in an effigy-burning spree. Congress leaders burnt the SDM’s effigy at the bus stop of Bhagrana village of Khera Block in Sirhind.
