Illegal tents pitched by security personnel of DIG, Indian Reserve Battalion, Parmod Baan have come up in a city park in violation of the byelaws.

Though administrative action against the violation is yet to come, some measures taken the municipal corporation officials, such as issuing notices, are stymied by certain people in the seat of power.

The encroachment in a public park outside the office of DIG (IRB) in the Model Town area has become a nuisance for public. Encroaching roads and public parks for the purpose of providing shelter to security men is continuing with the impunity.

A policeman on duty at a security tent told Hindustan Times on Monday that though DIG Parmod Bhan is out of station, the security personnel sit in two tents pitched outside the kothi. It is a public park and people cannot use it. Gurmail Singh, a local, claimed that an office of DIG of IRB is in a kothi and a public park has been encroached by pitching two tents.
He added that the park is meant for residents to have a leisurely walk, but they cannot do the same.

He alleged that the municipal corporation has failed to solve the problem of encroachments in city markets and on public land. Monika Thakur, a housewife, said: "We cannot go for a walk during the evening or night because the security guards keep sitting there. Where should we go for a walk? Public demands that the office should be shifted from here and the park should be made available to people."

Mayor Jaspal Singh said, "It is not in my notice." He added that he will talk to authorities concerned to look into the matter immediately.
