The Banga police on Sunday arrested a self-styled godman in Ghataro village of Nawanshahr for the death of his follower who hailed from Chak Guru in Garhshankar.

The deceased, Avtar Singh, had reportedly gone to seek the blessings of Ram Lubhaya to get his problems solved along with Paramjit Singh of Kamam in Nawanshahr. Paramjit, the complainant, said Avtar arrived at the godman’s place near Ghataro bus stop on Saturday afternoon.

He said the godman was on the roof of the house and asked his followers not to come there till he came down. He said since Avtar was in a hurry, he tried to climb the stairs. On this, the godman hurled bricks at him, he alleged. Avtar, who sustained injuries on his head, fell on the floor and died on the spot.

Paramjit Singh informed the police which started investigation in this case. The police called the deceased’s family members. Investigation officer Kashmir Singh said the police would interrogate the godman soon.
