Activists of Shiv Sena (Bal Thakerey) on Monday held a rally in the town to protest against Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to build a memorial to those killed during Operation Bluestar at the Darbar Sahib complex in Amritsar. The protesters later burned an effigy of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar.

Addressing the gathering, Sena leader Jagdish Kataria alleged that the SGPC had declared their open support to anti-national elements by deciding to build the memorial.

"To ensure peace and maintain law and order in the state, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal should intervene in the matter and snub elements who aim to vitiate the atmosphere in the state by hurting the religious sentiments of millions," he said.

"We are against terrorism and condemn any brutality on humanity. What happened in the past cannot be used as a platform to mess with the future," the Sena leader added.

He demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should step in if the state government failed to perform its 'raj dharma' due to political compulsions.
