The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) received a shot in the arm in Jandiala assembly constituency when various several Congressmen, including sitting and former councillors and former president of Jandiala nagar council, joined the SAD on Sunday.
Prominent among those who joined the SAD were Ravinder Pal Singh Kuku, former president, Jandiala nagar council; councillors Kulwant Singh, Surinder Kaur, Vijay Rani, Rakesh Kumar Tony; Mohinder Singh Virk, former vice-president nagar council; and others. All were backed by hundreds of Congress workers.
Welcoming the new entrants to the SAD, Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Majithia said: "The switchover is a big setback for the Congress as the massive 'quit Congress move' is bound to create ripples in that party and also cause a major dent in its vote-bank throughout Majha."
Meanwhile, welcoming Kuku and his team into the SAD fold, Majithia appreciated his move and assured him full respect and responsibility in the party.
Later, addressing a gathering, Majithia said: "People at all levels have realised that the Congress has nothing to offer to its workers as well as to the state. So, one after the other pro-Punjab and pro-people politicians from all across the state are voluntarily joining SAD."
Public has already rejected the Congress in the recent Vidhan Sabha polls it and now with workers also leaving it, the backbone of the party is broken, added Majithia.
