In a setback to Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) vice-president and Amritsar central MLA OP Soni, his nephew Vikas Soni failed to retain the president’s post of the Youth Congress for the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency, the elections for which were held on Sunday and the result was declared late in the night.

Soni lost by a margin of 48 votes to Dilraj Singh Sarkaria, sarpanch of Dhaul Kalan village. The new president is the nephew of Raja Sansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, popularly known as Sukh Sarkaria.

Dilraj polled 273 votes while Soni, the out-going president, secured 225 votes.

The new president was not only backed by his MLA uncle, but he had the backing of almost all senior Congress leaders of the Amritsar parliamentary constituency, including Amritsar west MLA Raj Kumar, former MLAs Jugal Kishore Sharma, Dinesh Bassi, Tarsem Singh DC and several others.

Though Sukh Sarkaria and MLA Soni belong to the Amarinder faction, they have never been on the best of terms with each other. In fact, all those who backed Dilraj did so as they were opposed to MLA Soni.

Khadoor Sahib constituency

Harmeet Singh Sandhu, former councillor from Patti, was elected as president of the Youth Congress of the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency by defeating his nearest opponent Malkit Singh by a margin of 139 votes.

In the polls held on Sunday, Harmeet secured 889 votes while his rival secured 750 votes.

The poll for the post of president was conducted on Sunday and the result was declared late in the night.

Senior Congress leaders, including former minister Sardool Singh Bandala, Inderjit Singh Zira and Prof Gurvinder Singh Mamanke honoured Harmeet.
