Nakodar police on Friday claimed to have busted an inter-district ring of notorious gangsters with the arrest of seven persons.
The accused are close to Sukha Kahlwan who was killed in an encounter with the police. Firearms, cartridges and sharp-edged weapons were recovered from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off, Nakodar city police conducted a raid at the grain market where they were planning to commit a robbery.
The accused were travelling in a Toyota Camry and a Maruti Swift car. Three 9 mm pistols (foreign made), 18 cartridges (16 of 7.5 bore and 2 of 2 mm bore) were recovered from them.
Nakodar deputy superintendent of police Balkar Singh said the gang is run by Sukhpreet Singh, alias Sukha, a resident of Barrewal village in Ludhiana who is facing trial in 15 cases of murder, attempt to murder and robbery at different police stations.
The accused are Kulwinder Singh Golu of Bishangarh village in Sangrur, Gangdeep Singh of Iyali Khurd village in Ludhiana, Gurwindar Singh Goldi of Mewa Singh Wala village in Kapurthala, Gurindar Singh alias Sonu of Preet Nagar Shimlapuri in Ludhiana, Bhupinderpal Singh alias Lucky of Fatiabad in Tarn Taran and Bunny of Gurdaspur.
The DSP said a case under section 399 (making preparation to commit decoity) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and 25/27/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused.
Their accomplices Khushpreet Singh Happy Baba of Sangowal village in Ludhiana and Rupindar Singh of Jogewal village in Ferozepur are absconding, he said.
The accused were produced in a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
The DSP said the sadar police arrested Ranjit Singh of Lambra, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi and Lovpreet Singh of Malsian village in Shahkot, on charges of snatching and recovered three stolen mobile handsets from them.
