Police claim to have arrested a gang of robbers who were involved in five cases of robbery that took place in the city in the past two months. The seven gang members were arrested with the weapons they had used to inflict injuries on their targets.
The mastermind of the gang identified as Mukesh Kumar, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh, as been arrested, while another member Dalip Kumar, also from UP, is absconding.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, police commissioner Pramod Ban said a police team from the PAU police station arrested the gang of seven members with weapons near the cremation ground in the Barewal area on Tuesday evening.
Those arrested have been identified as Mukesh, who currently stays at Haibowal; Varinder Kumar and Ramesh Kumar of Haibowal Kalan; Hardeep Singh of Jassian Road; Tarun Kumar of Badi Haibowal; Vishal Singh of Haibowal; and Ravinder Pal Singh of Atwal Nagar.
“The accused had been involved in many robbery cases, including the one at Baljit and Co petrol pump in Agar Nagar on the Ferozepur road on July 12. They had escaped after snatching Rs 7 lakh in cash from an employee of the petrol pump,” said Ban.
The gang also struck at the railway station parking lot and robbed Rs 3.5 lakh from the contractor of the area and fled the spot. The gang used sharp-edged weapons, along with a country-made pistol, which were also recovered by the police.
Ban said the police had recovered Rs 6.2 lakh from the accused and further investigation into the matter still on.
The police recovered two sharp weapons, two rods, two short swords, a country made .315 bore pistol and some rounds.
The police have slapped sections 382 (theft after preparation), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and others section of arms act on all accused.
