Sexual crime on rise in Ludhiana: One held for molesting minor; 10-year-old raped

A 10-year-old girl was abducted from Mundian Khurd area of Jamalpur on May 29. The culprit took the girl to the playground of a government school in Mundian and raped her.

Sexual predators are on the prowl in Ludhiana and are mostly targeting minors. Two more cases of sexual assault were reported in the city on Thursday.

In the first incident, a 10-year-old girl was abducted from Mundian Khurd area of Jamalpur on May 29. The culprit took the girl to the playground of a government school in Mundian and raped her.

Jamalpur police have registered a case under Sections 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Jamalpur station house officer Davinder Sharma said the family was reluctant to lodge a complaint, but they approached us on Thursday.

In another incident, a labourer allegedly molested his four- year-old neighbour at his rented accommodation in New Kundanpuri area.

Hearing her screams, the girl’s mother came to her rescue. When she raised an alarm, the man fled the spot. However, on being informed, Division 4 police registered a case under Sections 354B of the Indian Penal Code and Section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act and arrested him.

The accused was planning to flee the city. He was identified as 28-year-old Shankar Dev. Division 4 station house officer Surinder Singh said police arrested the accused immediately.
