Indian hockey team skipper Sardar Singh here on Tuesday appeared before a special investigation team (SIT), which is probing a UK woman’s allegations of sexual exploitation. Pleading innocence, Sardar claimed that he was neither engaged to the woman nor had ever established physical relations with her.

In his statement to the SIT headed by additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-4) Satvir Singh Atwal, Sardar accused the woman of framing him.

The hockey star admitted that they had met in 2012 during the London Olympics, but added that their relationship had been confined to friendship. He said the woman had no documentary proof to back her claim of their ‘engagement’.

The complainant is expected to appear before the SIT soon as the police have information that she has returned from the UK.

As the woman has alleged that Sardar sexually assaulted her in his maternal house at Bhaini Sahib village, the police have decided to call his parents and maternal relatives to join the investigation.

The London-based complainant, a former under-19 England hockey player, has claimed that Sardar got engaged to her in 2014, following which they entered into a physical relationship. According to her, he met her during the London Olympics and promised marriage. However, when she got pregnant, she was forced to undergo an abortion, she alleged. Subsequently, he started ignoring her and went back on his promise, she has claimed.
