Students for Society (SFS) on Wednesday gave a call for Panjab University bandh on April 21 for complete rollback of fee hike.
The party had called for a joint students’ action committee (JSAC) where a number of students gathered to discuss the future course of action.
When the students started gathering at Students’ Centre, police immediately reached the spot. “Defying the presence and fear of the police, students gathered to discuss the issue,” said SFS in a press statement.
Representatives of member organisations of JSAC put forward their views among the students. Students who got bailed on Saturday shared their experience of police and judicial custody. Afterwards, the discussion revolved around the cause behind fee hike, ie policies of privatisation and commercialisation of education being pursued by the government.
At the concluding note, students unanimously resolved to take the movement forward with full force and decided to gather at V-C office on April 21.
On April 11 also, students had called for a bandh and SFS was the main force behind that protest. It ended in stone pelting and arrest of 53 students, who were released on bail later. The bonhomie between various students’ outfits have ended.
