The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandik Committee (SGPC) announced the formation of a 3-member panel to probe the assault on Punjab senior IAS officer, Kahan Singh Pannu at Gobind Dham in the flood ravaged Garhwal hills of Uttarakhand.
" As the incident occurred near a gurdwara, enroute to the sacred shrine of Hemkunt Sahib and the targeted official was involved in evacuating pilgrims, the SGPC thinks it fit to investigate the matter and fix responsibility", a statement issued on behalf of SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar stated here on Wednesday.
The panel members are Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, SGPC general secretary, Rajinder Singh Mehta and Nirmal Singh Johal, both executive committee members. SGPC secretary, Roop Singh will act as the coordinator of the probe panel, which will submit its report to Makkar in the shortest possible time.
The panel will go into the reasons that may have provoked the attack on Pannu. The claims of the attackers that Pannu had passed certain derogatory remarks against Guru Gobind Singh will be verified.
Condemning the attack, Makkar said that it was an unfortunate incident. It was all the more condemnable as it occurred near a religious shrine and at a place where precious lives had been lost due to the floods, he added.
" Those who assaulted Pannu, deliberately dislodged his turban from his head. A turban is a sacred symbol for all Sikhism and dislodging it tantamounts to committing a grave offence", stated Makkar while referring to the video on U-tube.
Makkar said that Pannu had gone with other officials to help and evacuate pilgrims from the disaster prone areas of the hill state. He was doing his duty with dedication when this incident occurred, he added.
" I think the attack was pre planned and an excuse was found to humiliate the officer. The entire incident found its way to the U-tube, which gives weightage to the theory that a conspiracy may have been hatched against Pannu so as to defame him ", claimed the SGPC chief.
