The Akal Takht on Thursday asked Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia to carry out tankha (religious punishment) for distorting the Gurbani during an election rally for Arun Jaitley.

The Akal Takht jathedar directed him to carry out tankha, which includes seva at the Langar at all the five takhts - Sri Patna Sahib, Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Sri Damdama Sahib, Sri Hazur Sahib and Akal Takht. After completion of the seva, Majithia will perform akhand path at the Akal Takht and during this time, he will continue to do seva of langar at Golden Temple.

Earlier on Thursday, the fire-brand minister had reached the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs to meet the high priest to discuss the written apology submitted by him.

Rubbishing earlier reports that the cabinet minister had been summoned by the Akal Takht, jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh had said: “The Akal Takht is supreme and Majithia had come on his own to tender an apology, so there is no question of summoning him before the Takht."

On Monday, the jathedar had stated that Majithia would be asked to be present on May 1 when his written apology would be discussed in a meeting of the ‘Singh Sahibs’ at the Akal Takht.

Majithia has already sought an apology from Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib, situated at Nanded in Maharashtra. The Nanded Takht has made it clear that while it has accepted the apology of the minister, he will be exonerated only after he performs ‘tankha’ (religious punishment), for which Majithia will have to appear in person before the Takht.
