The owners of a rice sheller in Sangrur have been sentenced to three years imprisonment for not returning 53,000 bags of paddy that came for shelling in the rice mill during 1998-99.

Announcing the judgment, CJM Sonia Kinra also directed the owners of Pretty Rice Sheller--- Jitender Singh, his son Jarmej Singh and daughter in law Karamjeet Kaur--- to pay `99 lakh which was the cost of the missing bags as compensation to the Punjab Agro Food Corporation (PAFC).

Rahul Sharma, counsel for PAFC, said in the crop year 1998-99, the sheller had been allotted to PAFC for rice shelling and PAFC had sent 53,000 bags but the sheller failed to return the rice in the time allotted. The department then started investigations and found the bags missing from the sheller.

A complaint was filed in the Bhawanigarh police station on Feb 2, 2000.
