Five persons were injured in a clash that broke out between two groups when some people were found involved in alleged cattle smuggling near dairy complex on Hambran Road on Tuesday evening.

The problem arose when the group associated with Gauseva Dal and Shiv Sena came to know about alleged illegal smuggling of cattle and tried to intercept the truck filled with cows.

However, soon after they stopped the truck a group of people came out from near the dairies and allegedly assaulted the group using swords and sticks, during which five persons of the group trying to stop smugglers got injured.

Following a fight between the groups, police from five police stations was called in to take control of the situation. As per the sources, the truck comprised those cows and buffalos that were sick and did not produce milk, and they were supposed to be sent to Uttar Pradesh.

Police party from Punjab Agricultural University police station was also sent to the spot, as the situation had taken a communal colour.

Inspector Amarjit Singh said an FIR had been registered against the accused for assaulting the association members, at Haibowal police station.

He said no cows, but only buffaloes were found in the truck that was off-loaded after the police arrived at the spot.

Senior police officials visited the spot on Wednesday evening to inspect the prevailing situation.
