Three police personnel, including a station house officer (SHO), in the district have been booked under murder charges and placed under suspension, for the alleged torture of an accused in police custody, leading to his death on Thursday.

Deceased Mukesh Kumar (30), a resident of Chiri village under Lakhan Majra police station of the district, was apprehended by the police on Tuesday on charges of gambling from his village, along with three others, identified as Ravinder, Surender and Jai Kishan.

Kuldeep Kumar, brother of the deceased, alleged Mukesh, who worked as mason, was rushed to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak, on Tuesday night, where he died during treatment.

On Thursday, the deceased’s family, accompanied by fellow villagers, refused to allow the postmortem on his body and laid a blockade at the Medical Mor here, causing a severe traffic jam.

The blockade was lifted only after an assurance by senior police officers that action would be taken against the erring police officials. An autopsy was then conducted at the PGIMS.

“Lakhan Majra police station SHO Kulbir Singh, head constable Kuldeep and constable Randhir were booked under murder charges and were placed under suspension,” the police said.
