Two police personnel in the district were suspended and two Home Guard personnel sent to police lines on Monday on charge of letting off two suspected drug-peddlers, incidently on the eve of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Gamdoor Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Rama, and his driver, head constable Jagtar Singh, were accused of striking a deal with two men caught from Dabawali road with opium and letting them escape.

It was learnt that the SHO, head constable, and two other policemen were deployed at a checkpoint on the Dabawali road when the two men from Haryana, riding a bus, were caught with the contraband.

SP (detective) Amarjit Singh Sandhu, who conducted an inquiry into the matter, confirmed that the two police officials had been charged with accepting bribe to free the suspects. "We found the charges to be correct," he said. "The other two officials were transferred. Further inquiry is on."

SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said that he had issued suspension orders to the SHO and his driver, and transferred Navdeep Singh and Tirath Singh of Home Guards from Rama to Police Lines in Bathinda.

Inspector Paramjit Singh would be the SHO of Rama in place of Gamdoor Singh.
