After a 90-minute shootout in which a cop was injured, three accused in the June 27 murderous attack on deputy superintendent of police (jails) Vikramjeet Panthe were arrested here on Monday.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jagdev Singh, first to move into their hideout at New Sant Nagar, Basti Sheikh, was shot in the abdomen. Three-dozen more rounds were fired between 30 minutes past midnight and 2am before gangsters Sukhwinder Singh "Bhau" of Sant Nagar; Sukhi Bidhipuria of this district's Bidhipur village; and Fatehjeet Singh of Nawanshahr were caught.

Around 11pm on Sunday, the Jalandhar police moved into New Sant Nagar on a trail of the three gangsters. When ASI Jagdev Singh led his team into Bhau's house, the gangster fired at him from the inside. The officer was moved to safety and a quick cordon was thrown around the place. Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Rajinder Singh; assistant commissioner of police (west) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu; ACP (investigation) Harjinder Singh; and several station house officer (SHOs) arrived with the backup and engaged the fleeing gangsters - who were trying to scale walls to get on to the adjoining roofs - in a gunfight.

"We have seized two 0.32-bore pistols and four live cartridges; and recovered four cars and a motorcycle from the gangsters," said the DCP. Later in the day, the injured ASI was moved to Dayanand Medical College Hospital, Ludhiana, and his condition is stable. "The gangsters have revealed in the preliminary interrogation their hand in the attack on DSP Panthe; and we'll know their motive once we quiz them further," said DCP Rajinder Singh, adding: "They remained in the civil hospital all day for the treatment of the injuries sustained in the encounter."

On the night of June 27, two men had fired at DSP Panthe near Basti Bawa Khel here when he was on his way from Jalandhar to Kapurthala in his car.
