Police claim that gangsters Sukhwinder Singh “Bhau”, Sukhi Bidhipuria, and Fatehjeet Singh, who were arrested after a two-hour encounter at Jalandhar, had been planning to kill many rivals this week.

They are members of the Gonder gang that had killed its rival, Sukha Kahalwan, before his police escorts on January 21. On May 26, Fatehjeet Singh and Ashu of Garhdiwala (Hoshiarpur) had freed Sukhi Bidhipuria from the custody of the Amritsar police on his way to a court hearing.

“Bidhipuria wanted to kill his girlfriend, suspecting that she had sent his pictures with her to his wife. The gang also planned to free another criminal, Perra, from the Gurdaspur jail to add to its numbers. Fatehjeet had a score to settle with Sukhdev of Phagwara.

On September 15, 2010, the Model Town police had booked gang members Bhau, Gonder, Navjot, and Rahul on the charges of murder, causing grievous hurt in extortion, and carrying illegal weapons,” said a senior police officer.

Gonder and Rahul continue to be fugitives from the law, while gang members Ravi Bhagat and Bhau received life imprisonment on February 15, 2013. Bhau had come out of the Bathinda central jail last month on parole, and was required to report back on July 9. On Sunday night, Bidhipuria and Fatehjeet, coming in from SAS Nagar, met Ashu at Kishangarh; and after dinner at a dhaba on the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway, they had come to Bhau’s house in New Sant Nagar, Jalandhar. Police had been on fugitive Bidhipuria’s trail for a week, and his scent led them to the place.

“The police never expected that the accused will fire at them. When ASI Jagdev Singh took a bullet, we coordinated a careful operation and captured the attackers,” the senior officer added.
