Demanding that the state government should not route the ambitious pod project through the Mahan Singh Gate area, the local shopkeepers on Saturday staged a protest.

They were supported by District Congress Committee chief Jugal Kishore Sharma.

The shopkeepers kept the shops closed till noon and staged a dharna at the chowk.

Shopkeepers' association general secretary Varun Bhatia said, "If the project is routed through the bazaar, it will ruin business and affect the livelihood of all those who have shops here. We demand that the government look for an alternative route so that our livelihood is not affected."

The state government intends to start driverless pods on an erected track through the bazaar. Sharma said that in the interest of shopkeepers, the government must change the route.
