Medium pacer Siddharth Kaul bagged five wickets, while off spinner Harbhajan Singh celebrated his Test team recall with three wickets as Punjab crushed Hyderabad by innings and 68 runs to bag seven points including bonus at PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar, on Monday.
Reeling at 46 for 3, Hyder-abad needed some rearguard action and Akshath Reddy and VVS Laxman did not disappoint.
Punjab, looking for a quick breakthrough, gave Laxman a life when he was on 22. Laxman's catch at the first slip was fumbled by Karan Goel off Kaul.
"We fielded well all through the match. We did drop Laxman but in the end it didn't prove too costly. Siddhrath finally got Laxman before he could take the game away from us," Harbhajan said.
Apart from this, the duo batted calmly adding 108 runs for the fourth wicket. Just when it looked that both will walk away with the match, Bhajji had Reddy (59) caught by Mandeep Singh.
Laxman (67) came off 110 balls studded with 10 hits to the fence. He became the fourth victim of Kaul.
Bending his back, Kaul hurried Laxman into a mistimed pull, which was caught by Amitoze at midwicket.
After that it was a mere formality and with wickets falling at regular intervals, Hyderabad's second innings folded at 239.
Bhajji then polished off the tail to finish with 3 for 50 from 23 overs. Elated Bhajji was full of praise for Punjab team and said he was happy with how the team handled pressure.
" I am very happy with the way the team fought. It showed the intent that these players are capable of playing at higher level and make a mark. Siddharth Kaul really bowled well," he said.
Brief scores: Hyderabad: 258 & 239 (VVS Laxman 67, Akshath Reddy 59 Siddarth Kaul 5/53, Harbhajan Singh 3/50) vs Punjab 565 for 6 declared.
