Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann has condemned chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar over the sacking of Balwant Singh Nandgarh as Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar.

Addressing “Punjab Bachao Rally” of his party on Sunday at the grain market near the Jalandhar bypass here, Mann said his party stood with Nandgarh, whose sacking “has proved that the CM can do anything to remain in power and please the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh)”. The Nanakshahi calendar of 2003 was a symbol of the separate identity of Sikhs, and by vouching for the Bikrami calendar, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar had acted as a puppet in hands of Badal, the SAD (A) leader further said.

He chided Badal over the transfer of an Enforcement Directorate (ED) official who had questioned revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a money laundering case linked with a drug scandal. “Had the SAD been confident about Majithia’s being innocent, the poor officer would never have been transferred,” he said, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre of hampering fair inquiry.

He said his Punjab Bachao Rally was targeted against drug abuse and aimed at preparing for the 2017 assembly polls.
