Singer-actor Jassi Jasraj and lawyer Himmat Singh Shergill, who has been fighting the case of Gujarat Sikh farmers in the Supreme Court, have emerged as the two main contenders for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket from Anandpur Sahib constituency.

As the party is yet to announce its candidate, both Jasraj and Shergill have started participating in the party's activities and connecting to people.

Jasraj, who joined AAP in Jalandhar on January 9 in the presence of AAP national spokesperson and working committee member Sanjay Singh, hails from Sohali village of SAS Nagar district.

Speaking to HT, Jasraj said AAP had brought a revolution in the country and a wave of fighting against injustice and corruption prevailed in society.

Jasraj said Arvind Kejriwal had the ability to change the political system and was the real hero who, along with Anna Hazare, had signalled an historic shift by his anti-corruption campaign.

Jasraj, who featured in the film 'Bikker Bai Sentimental' in April last year, claimed that as he sang patriotic songs in his albums, he now had an opportunity to serve the country through AAP.

He said the state had been struggling with drug abuse and the youth is becoming addicted to drugs, so AAP is the right channel to fight against this menace.

"It is up to the party high command to give me ticket or not. I would continue supporting AAP even if it declares another candidate from the Anandpur Sahib seat," said Jasraj, adding that he was committed and wanted to work for people.

Lawyer Himmat Singh Shergill, who has been fighting the case of Sikh farmers of Gujarat in the Supreme Court, said, "I have applied for the ticket from Anandpur Sahib and it is up to the party to decide."

Shergill, who belongs to Chandigarh, said he is the legal adviser to the party the ideology of which motivated him to join it.

AAP executive member Shiv Kaura, councillor in the Banga municipal council, said they would support the candidate which the party announced from the seat.

Prof Nanak Singh, Dr Sohan Singh and Bhag Singh from Rupnagar besides others have applied for the ticket from this seat.

In Punjab, AAP has chosen renowned personalities like HS Phoolka from Ludhiana, Bhagwant Maan from Sangrur, Gul Panag from Chandigarh and Dharamvira Gandhi from Patiala.
