Sisters try to commit suicide, saved by diver

Under stress of financial crisis in family, two sisters hailing from Sangrur on Tuesday, who tried to commit suicide by jumping in Bhakra main line canal near Passiana in Patiala, have been saved by a diver.

Alert by the devotees, who were there to immerse the idol of Ganesha, and prompt reaction by diver Om Parkash saved the life of both the girls.

One of the two sisters is employed as a lecturer in a Sangrur college while the other is a teacher in a convent school of Sunam.

Om Parkas said, "As I heard someone crying for help, I rushed to the spot promptly and rescued both the girls."

The rescued girls were handed over to Sangrur police, who informed the parents of the sisters. They were taken back home by their parents.

Patiala SSP, Hardial Singh Mann, said considering bravery of the diver and his life saving action, the police would recommended his name for bravery award.
