Six ducks died under mysterious circumstances in Bhambri village on Monday morning.
Residents of the locality fear that bird flu could be the reason behind the deaths. Senior medical officer Sohan Lal Rana reached the venue and asked the people to inform the health department if more ducks died in the village pond.
The health department officials refused to comment on the reason behind the deaths. A dead duck has been sent for postmortem and an official of the department said they could comment on the issue only after they received the postmortem reports.
"Looking at the possible dangers of bird flu, the health department has already constituted teams and till now, there is not a single positive case of bird flu in the entire district."
Dr Jatinder Singh, deputy director of the animal husbandry department said, "The sudden fall in temperature can also be the reason behind the deaths. We have sent the duck sample to Jalandhar and reports will be out within a week."
Singh added, "There are around 80 ducks in the village pond and only six died so we cannot say bird flu is the reason. If that were the case, more than one-third of the total ducks would have been killed."
