Faridkot police on Friday arrested six people, including two women, on charges of extortion, intimidation and laying a marriage trap.

Hakam Singh of Shaheed Balwinder Singh Nagar in Faridkot was one of their victims. About 18 months ago, he had lost his wife and there was no one to bring up his children. A woman contacted him on his cell phone and proposed marriage. Hakam agreed and she called again on May 27. She said she was Virpal "Pale".

When he met her that day, she took him to the house of a woman, Kuldeep Kaur of Dogar Basti in Faridkot, where suspects Jagmohan Singh, Harjinder Singh, Baljinder Singh, Manpreet Singh, Sonu, and Manna allegedly stripped and thrashed him, saying he had abducted their sister. They demanded Rs 60,000 from Hakam, after which he paid Rs 40,000 in cash.

"Two women and four men are under arrest," SP (detective) Dilbagh Singh Pannu told media here on Friday. "The police have recovered Rs 1.78 lakh cash and a cheque for Rs 3 lakh from them. We also seized three driving licences in the names of different people. Suspects Sonu and Tarsem Singh are on the run."

The gang had looted many people and people didn't approach the police for the fear of public ridicule, said the SP. One of the arrested men had a revolver on him, he added.

A few months ago, a farmer at Khara village in Faridkot district was robbed of more than Rs 50,000 by a woman who earlier stayed for two months as his wife with his family. Out of the fear of social stigma, the family did not report the matter.
