Hosts India along with 10 other teams will compete for title in the men’ section while eight women teams are also in fray in the sixth BR Ambedkar World Kabbadi Cup, backed by the Punjab government, that began here on Thursday.
In men’s event, India, Argentina, United States, England, Canada, Australia, Iran, Sweden, Tanzania, Kenya and Sierra Leone would compete. In women’s event, India, Sierra Leone, Kenya, United States, Mexico, Tanzania, New Zealand and Sri Lanka would clash for the title.
Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal, while inaugurating the event, said the sports policy had given a major fillip to the sporting activity in the state. The CM said that as a tribute to the founding father of India’s constitution Bharat Ratna awardee Ambedkar, the state government has now named the tournament after him.
The star attraction of the inauguration event, singer duo Nooran Sisters, mesmerised the audience with their scintillating performance. Likewise, Punjabi singers Jaspinder Narula, Gippy Grewal and Sharry Maan along with comedian Bharti Singh entertained the audience.
Earlier, Olympian Rajpal Singh, athlete Mandeep Kaur and kabaddi Icon Gurpreet Singh lit the flame to mark the inauguration. Sri Lankan petroleum minister Chandima Veerkoti was the special guest.
