Police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh (left) and ADCP (crime) HS Brar display the seized heroin and weapons at a press conference in Amritsar on Saturday.
Disclosing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said that during questioning, the accused, a resident of Sandhu Colony, Chheharta, revealed that he was planning to supply the drug to metro cities outside Punjab.
He added that during the ongoing drive against smugglers and drug suppliers, the Amritsar police commissionerate has so far ar rested 284 persons and registered 260 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“Wi t h these arrests, the ground level network of drug suppliers has been smashed completely. In fact, it was necessary to stop the availability of drugs on the streets. During the interrogation of the arrested drug suppliers, some other smugglers, who are absconding, have been identified,” he said.
Aulakh further said that since the launch of the drive against dr ug smugglers and suppliers, the rush of addicts to de-addiction centres has increased manifold.
“This shows that there is no availability of drugs on the streets. De-addiction centres are now facing shortage of doctors and beds to accommodate these addicts,” he said.
He maintained that the police are liaising with the authorities concerned to depute more doctors and arrange more beds to meet the growing rush of addicts at the de-addiction centres.
