With the city witnessing a rise in the incidents of snatching in the past one week, a snatcher was nabbed and beaten up by the people when he was running away after snatching the earring of a woman in the Civil Lines area on Tuesday morning.
Sumitra Devi, who lives in government quarters, was going home along with her daughter Priti on a rickshaw when a motorcycle-borne person snatched her earring and drove away.
As the woman cried for help, people rushed towards the snatcher. A person reportedly placed his car in front of the motorcycle of the snatcher and people nabbed him. The accused was beaten up by the people before being handed over to the police.
The accused has been identified as Harjit Singh, a resident of Moga. A case against him has been registered at the Civil Lines police station under Section 379 B of Indian Penal Code. Station house officer, Civil Lines police station, Robin Hans, said that police would be questioning the accused to know if he was involved in other incidents of snatching in the city or not.
At least, seven incidents of snatching have been reported in the city in the past one month. The snatchers mainly target women and take away their earrings, while in a case cash and a mobile phone of a person was snatched in the area.
