Snatchers’ gang busted in Kapurthala, six arrested

Police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of snatchers with the arrest of six persons at Vatavali village of Sultanpur Lodhi subdivision in the district.

The police have recovered four pairs of earrings, a motorcycle, a .38 bore revolver, five cartridges, four sharp-edged weapons and one screw driver from the accused who were nabbed from the village cremation ground.

The accused have been identified as Sunny Kumar, Badal Singh and Rajwinder Singh, alias Raju, residents of Talwandi Chaudrian, and Rajinder Singh, alias Jindu, Satpal Singh, alias Satta, and Karanpal Singh, alias Karan, residents of Kapurthala.

The seventh accused, identified as Sajan of Busowal village, managed to flee from the spot.

Addressing a press conference, Sultanpur Lodhi deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Pyara Singh said following a tip-off, a team from the Kabirpur police station raided the cremation ground and found that the accused were hatching a conspiracy to commit a crime.

“When quizzed, they (accused) confessed to have snatched earrings, chains, mobile phones and other valuables from commuters during the night,” the DSP said.

The accused mainly committed crime on the Rail Coach Factory-Jalandhar, Kapurthala-Parvej Nagar, Mundi Morh-Sultanpur Lodhi and RCF-Sultanpur Lodhi roads, he said.

The DSP said the absconding accused will be arrested soon and the police will take a remand for all the six arrested persons.

“More revelations are expected during remand,” he said.

A case has been registered under sections 399 and 402 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Kabirpur police station.
