The city police claimed to have busted a gang of snatchers, arresting seven of its members. Two members are absconding.

ADCP RK Sharma, addressing a press conference on Friday, said that the snatchers namely Kuldip Singh alias Gopi, resident of Basti Gujan; Vicky Mesih, Vishla alias Lucky, Vipin alias Vicky and Robin Messih, residents of Basti Peerdad; Kuldip Singh alias Karan from Basti Bawa Khel and Balwinder alias Billa, a resident of Shiv Nagar near Nagara, had been arrested.

"A police party arrested them based on a tip off, when they were planning to loot a petrol pump near the Verka Milk plant. A toy gun, some sharp-edged weapons, an Indica car and two motorcycles have been recovered from their possession."

During preliminary investigations, the accused reportedly have confessed to their involvement in at least 16 loots and snatchings in the city. The gang used to loot people in night using a car, owned by one of the accused.

Contrary to claims by several police officials that drug addicts were behind the spurt in snatching incidents, none of the arrested is a drug addict, although a banned substance was seized from two of the accused. Further investigations are still on.
