In the sinister world of snatching, there needs to be a method to the crime. Sooner or later, however, the criminals are caught and their method falls apart.
With the recent spate of snatchings a big worry, the UT police claims to have identified three types of modus operandi used in the crime. Four members of a gang — operating on Activas and executing the snatching on a running vehicle — have been identified, but police have not shared details so that they are not alerted.
To identify these miscreants, the police have depended on CCTV footage.
Police claim that now that they have an understanding of the modus operandi and have mapped the vulnerable area also, cops in civvies will be deployed to check such incidents.
SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said a special anti-snatching squad comprising an inspector and eight other officials had been formed.
FOLLOW THE VICTIM ON BIKE, ALIGHT AND SNATCH
This type of gang is operating mostly in Sectors 15 and 23. Here, bikers follow a soft target, usually a woman or a senior citizen, for some distance. One of the miscreants then alights from the vehicle and completes the snatching.
This gang, operating mostly in Sectors 38 and Dadumajra, use Activa and are just snatch-and-run on a vehicle type of miscreants.
This gang operates bringing the doorbell and operate in Sector 44. They usually target a woman senior citizen and change houses often. Keeping a recce on their target is the most important preparatory step for such criminals.
