Crime in the city is on the rise so much so that even the police personnel are not safe. A woman deputy superintendent of police (DSP) received severe injuries after snatchers pounced on her and she fell off the rickshaw on Sunday night.
The incident occurred at about 9.30 pm near the bus stand police check post, when Gormel Kaur, who is posted as a DSP with the Punjab Armed Police (PAP), was coming back from a market with her daughter Ritu on a rickshaw. Two motorcycle-borne youths pounced on her and tried to snatch the purse, police sources said.
However, Gurmail did not leave her purse and fell off the rickshaw. Sources said that the snatchers dragged her for some distance and fled with her mobile phone. Gurmel suffered serious injuries on her left shoulder and head.
The DSP is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU ward of a private hospital.
The Division 7 police have registered a case and her mobile phone has been put on surveillance, police said.
It is pertinent to mention here that seven incidents of snatching have taken place in the city within a fortnight.
