Ludhiana residents are taking the patriotic fervour to social networking sites as most of them have set tricolour as their profile pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp among other apps. Besides, messages, songs and video clips on nationalism are being circulated.

According to the residents, setting tricolour as profile photo is the best way to express love for the nation. Other pictures depicting the end of British rule in India are among the favorites of the residents.

Arun Sharma, a businessman residing at Gurdev Nagar locality, says it becomes difficult to express patriotic spirit due to busy schedule. "On Independence Day and Republic Day, the feeling of love among the people towards the nation comes out in different forms. Putting national flag on the display is one of such ideas." He says even national songs become favorite during such occasions.

Playing patriotic songs from different Bollywood movies are among other favourite ways to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday. Several videos of Indian army and nationalistic songs are doing the rounds on WhatsApp and other messaing apps. Several people have also tagged their friends on Facebook with different pictures on the special day.

Priyanka Sharma, a student, said the youth know the importance of freedom struggle against the British Empire. "Though we were not a part of the freedom struggle, we feel it near on the occasion of Independence Day. It is like a festival that we celebrate and social networking websites are the best medium for the same," she added.
