Havaldar major Rajiv Kamal, 39, was shot dead by his subordinate, naik Malkit Singh, 38, after an argument at the army shooting range at Haripur village in Adampur near Jalandhar on Tuesday afternoon.
Sources said Malkit Singh, who hails from Dera Bassi in Mohali district, pumped two bullets from his INSAS rifle into Kamal’s chest, killing him on the spot.
Kamal, who hails from Bihar, and Malkit were part of the 55 Mechanised Brigade stationed at Beas in Amritsar district. They were taking part in the routine practice when the incident occurred.
Malkit Singh was arrested by the Jalandhar (rural) police. The statements of soldiers who witnessed the incident was also recorded.
